The Town Steering Committee will gather in the Small Conference Room at 10:30 this morning.  A report from the Gym Task Force is on that agenda along with a discussion of the exterior design of the Town Office building.  Then on Thursday the Middlebury Business Development Fund Advisory Board will meet in the Main Conference Room at 1 PM where they will finalize the Statement Of need and Fundraising Strategy.  Get more info anytime by visiting the Town of Middlebury’s Website.

The Town Of Middlebury Select Board will hold their regular meeting this evening at 7 in the Town Offices Conference Room.  Items on the agenda include a discussion regarding the purchase of the Co-op Fire Parcel at the base of Chipman Hill with funding from the Town Conservation Fund.  Reports will also be heard from various Town Committees including the Middlebury Business Development Fund Advisory Board, the Energy Committee, the Town Steering Committee, and a Middlebury Fire Department Project Update.  For a complete agenda just visit the Town’s Website.

Representatives from non-profit, government and for-profit organizations that serve Addison County’s senior citizens will gather at Addison County Home Health and Hospice today. Lindsey Tucker, Deputy Commissioner, Health Benefit Exchange Division, will provide an update or progress report on the state’s healthcare exchange. A light lunch will be provided.  The meeting will take place this afternoon from 12:00 – 1:30 PM.

A natural gas company in Vermont hopes to extend a proposed natural gas pipeline to carry fuel under Lake Champlain to International Paper in Ti.  Vermont Gas says it has reached an agreement with IP to share engineering and environmental studies of the project.  The company already plans to build a pipeline south from Chittenden County to Vergennes, Middlebury and Rutland.  Company spokesman Steve Wark said extending the line under the lake to the paper plant would provide an anchor customer and could be built at no additional cost to residential ratepayers.  International Paper now burns fuel oil. Company spokeswoman Donna Wadsworth said switching to natural gas would reduce fuel costs and greenhouse gas emissions.

A burglary at a home on Barker Road in Ripton cost the owners thousands of dollars in jewelry, according to Vermont State Police.  At some point between May 9th and Monday afternoon, police say someone broke into the home and stole a Tiffany platinum wedding and engagement ring set with a large flawless diamond valued at more than $15,000.  Anyone with information about the theft is asked to call state police at the New Haven Barracks. The Champlain Valley's favorite bike tour, Le Tour de Farms, is being held this Sunday as a fundraiser for Rural Vermont, Addison County Relocalization Network, and Vermont Bike and Pedestrian Coalition.  The first group of bicyclists will begin their ride from the Shoreham Green at 10:30AM, and arrive at the Orwell Green around Noon.  There will be bicyclists on our roads all day, and they will return to the Shoreham Village Center to enjoy Apple Fest, a fundraiser for the Platt Memorial Library, from Noon – 5PM. The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals is going to hold a hearing next month in Rutland in the newly renovated and restored Post Office and courthouse in Rutland.  Chief Judge Dennis Jacobs, of the New York-based appeals court, said the October 5th hearing before a three-judge panel will be the first time in the 123-year history of the appeals court that it will sit in Vermont. 

The third annual Ticonderoga street art project will conclude with an auction.  The art will be auctioned Thursday, September 20th at the Ticonderoga Knights of Columbus. People can preview the art beginning at 5:30PM. There will be music by Nelson Shapiro and free appetizers at 6PM with a cash bar. The auction will commence at 7PM with professional auctioneer Rick Harker.  Sponsored by the Ticonderoga Montcalm Street Partnership, this year’s street art theme is “For the Birds.” Community members and organizations purchased birdhouses, which they decorated and will auction to benefit the TMSP.

Boating on Lake George could be more complicated and more expensive next summer.  The Lake George Park Commission is considering regulations to fight the spread of invasive species in the lake including regulations that could contain mandatory decontamination of boats prior to launching, designated hours at public launches and new fees. The committee is meeting every two weeks in communities around the lake as it prepares to make recommendations on how to best deal with the problem of invasive species.  Officials expect the L-G-P-C to decide on possible regulations this fall and implement them in 2013.

Vermont fall foliage reports across the state will begin Tuesday, the 18th.   According to the press release, fall foliage reports will be issued every Tuesday from September 18 to October 30.   The report will include a map that has the best driving routes, audio updates and hiking/walking trail recommendations.  Leaf peppers can also call 1-800-VERMONT to get up-to-date information on the progress of the foliage season.

Governor Peter Shumlin is kicking off his re-election campaign, with the Democrat saying he wants to make the case to voters that there's more work to do. Shumlin's first debate with his GOP opponent, state Senator Randy Brock, is set for this evening.

More than 600 Vermonters will receive refunds for voicemail services they paid for starting in 2005.  According to a press release, a Nevada company, Voicemail Direct USA LLC, now known as Intelicom Messaging LLC, charged Vermonters for services they did not agree to buy. The company reached a settlement with the Vermont Attorney General's office.  Refunds total more than $50,000.  According to the Vermont Attorney General's Office, Voicemail direct violated the Vermont Consumer Protection Act by charging consumers without their permission and failed to notify consumers a list of charges.   The press release states that Vermont law bans most third-party charges from being placed on consumers' landline telephone bills.

The Rutland Central Supervisory Union along with the Vermont Adult Learning Center recently relocated to the former Community College of Vermont Building on Evelyn Street.  Last year CCV moved into its new quarters on West Street. The two organizations bring a combined 22 staffers to the Evelyn Street building. RCSU came from a South Main Street office where Superintendant Debra Taylor said they were spending more money on less space.

While it came as no surprise, Governor Peter Shumlin is now officially running for re-election.  Monday night, he kicked off the campaign in Burlington, ending a busy day of appearances and speeches.  He told the packed room at Nectars Restaurant his administration is making progress and needs to follow issues through.  He'll face Republican state Senator Randy Brock in November, saying the two have very different visions of the future for Vermont.

By an overwhelming vote Monday night, the Burlington City Council approved putting a non-binding question on the ballot in November regarding hemp and cannabis.  The question asks if products made from the two should be legalized, and supporters of putting it on the ballot say it's a way to gauge the public's view on the issue likely to come up in Montpelier before the Legislature.  The final council vote was 11 to 3 in favor of putting the question before voters.

A U.S. Department of Agriculture official is visiting farms in Vermont and New Hampshire to discuss how the growing agricultural economy is helping to create jobs and expand local and regional food systems.  Deputy Secretary Kathleen Merrigan starts in Vermont today, where she is touring the Brattleboro Food Co-op, which has grown from a tiny warehouse storefront in 1979 into a $17 million operation.  In New Hampshire, Merrigan will visit the Stonewall Farm in Walpole, a nonprofit working farm and educational center.

Thursday is primary day in New York.  The Board of Elections upgraded the process for election night results.   This comes after the board took heavy criticism.   Officials say the new process is designed to enhance accuracy rather than speed.   The board updated its website to better inform voters.   It also created a smart phone app to help people find their polling locations.

In New York the state's secretive ethics board says members did not vote to block the probe into a state Assembly sexual-harassment scandal. The issue was the subject of a closed-door meeting last week, prompting one member to quit over what he called a lack of independence from Governor Andrew Cuomo and legislative leaders.

Brandon Music on Country Club Road in Brandon will present Countryman and the Buffalo Band this Thursday at 7:30pm. General Admission is $12.   The NYC-based Countryman and the Buffalo Band plays contemporary soul jazz with an exciting modern flare. Led by saxophonist Geoff Countryman and comprised entirely by some of the city’s top young jazz musicians, the band combines their deep understanding of jazz improvisation with forays into funk, soul and electronica.

Ladies’ Night Out Women’s Choir is starting up fall rehearsals on September 18th for performances the weekend and Tuesday after Thanksgiving.  Women who would like to join the group should contact Lucy Allen Tenenbaum, Director, for a chance to do some “Musicking”. This is not an audition but an opportunity to sing together and find out where each voice fits in the choir. The Town of Williston will soon see some big changes to the commercial district.  Construction can already be seen from Route 2 as crews work to add in several new businesses.  There are two separate projects in progress including a new CVS Pharmacy, which will be located at the former site of imported car center.  Also in the works is a project known as lot 30.  It will house several new businesses like Panera bread, and Verizon wireless.   The towns director of planning and zoning says the town hopes to take on a different look.  “These are buildings that are going to be smaller than some of the big box buildings that people have seen in the past, so that's kind of a shift and that's the direction that the town is trying to go in terms of development in that part of town.”  The CVS Pharmacy is expected to be finished around the holidays later this year.  The other retailers hope to be in by summer of 2013.

The popular web hosting company "GoDaddy" was hacked and shut down for a period of time Monday. A local small business in Williston was one of the many victims. "Urban Dance Complex" says its website was completely shut down early Monday afternoon. A hacker is responsible but the motivation isn't clear. Some news outlets report that "GoDaddy", has been a target of hackers' because it publicly supported federal anti-piracy legislation.  The Urban Dance Complex website was back up and running Monday night. GoDaddy's website, says no sensitive information was compromised.
